There is a sandy loam on the valley floor, and limestone at higher elevations with peat on the moors.
There are orchids and botanically species rich grassland on the limestone 'knolls'.
FAUNA
There are roe dear and, because of the shoots on the farm every year, there are pheasant, partridge, grouse and duck.
Areas of woodland and the larger hedgerows on the farm provide habitat for Redstarts, a scarce upland breeding species.

In one of the woods there is a cave with evidence that it has been used by bronze age man; this is Fairy Holes, in Fairy Holes Wood.
High Laund Farm has 50% hedges and 50% walls. The drystone walls (sandstone and limestone) have been maintained within Stewardship Schemes.
VERNACULAR BUILDINGS
There are three stone barns, one of which is listed.
