LAKE DISTRICT WORLD HERITAGE PROJECT

Cumbria and the Lake District are vibrant; working places with a long cultural history, generations of farming families have created the landscape we all enjoy today and it deserves international recognition. A strong partnership of organisations are working on the nomination to the UK Government and UNESCO - currently planned for 2011 which if successful would bring World Heritage Status in Britain’s Olympic year, 2012.  Cumbria will have to submit two documents, the Nomination Document and the Management Plan for the site.  The documents will present the proposed site as a living, working environment. The Park Authority has already stated that World Heritage Site status would not bring any additional planning restraints and the UK government is encouraging the bid.
