The pasture ground varies from clay to lighter soils. This is wet ground; there has been an average rainfall in recent years of 90 inches +.
Carboniferous rocks form the open and wild upland area. The Bowland Fells are formed from hard Millstone Grit of the Upper Carboniferous era, whie softer alternating bands of shale and sandstone have eroded to create the lower undulating areas.

Hareden Farm's upper pastures are linked to blanket bog and heather moorland.
The flora is mainly heather which is a glorious bright purple in August.
FAUNA
Hareden Farm is in the midst of a region which is of international importance for breeding bird populations, this is recognised by its designation as a Special Protection Area under the European Community Birds Directive. This makes it one of the best breeding ground for Merlin and Hen Harrier in Europe. and Peregrines are frequently sighted.
Moorland supports breeding Curlew, Ring Ouzel and Red Grouse.
