Carboniferous rocks form the open and wild upland area. The Bowland Fells are formed from hard Millstone Grit of the Upper Carboniferous era, while softer alternating brands of shale and sandstone have eroded to create the lower undulating areas.
SOIL TYPE(S)
The soil is neutral slightly acid; copper and magnesium deficient; there is a high % of iron in the area.
There are garden plant collections; of particular note is the 'Geranium Collection' donated by Judith Bradshaw of Catforth Gardens which is inter planted with Phlox Paniculata.
Tha farm maintains traditional hay meadows.
Foxes, deer and badgers have all been seen on the farm. The farm is an excellent place to see wading birds with around 25 pairs of Lapwing nesting annually.

New mixed native hedgerows have been planted. 90% of the boundaries are dry stone walls built with fawn coloured sandstone.
The main barn at Cobble Hey was built with the first single story dwelling in 1685.
